Week One | Intro and Inspo for your Elevate Journey

This first week will include 3 LIVE SESSIONS

1. Intro session.
2. An amazing interview with one of my favorite photographers and humans...
Lean Timms.
Lean shares so much about her amazing journey as a travel and lifestyle photographer, her gear, settings, techniques, shot list, and more! (This interview blew my mind.)
You are going to LOVE Lean...and her photography is extraordinary.
3. A LIVE conversation with Ruth Ribeaucourt (owner & editor of Faire Magazine).
Ruth has generously agreed to share what makes a good submission for her magazine and her experience as a published artist.

Kind Words from Amazing Creatives

If you are looking to expand your creative horizon in photography, video, Lightroom and enjoy working with an enthusiastic and thoughtful creator, I highly recommend Kim Klassen. Kim is a gifted doer and maker who has an extraordinary ability for helping her clients reach their full creative potential. I have taken several photography and video classes with Kim in addition to working 1:1. Her enthusiasm and love for what she does is infectious. You can’t help but learn from Kim, she makes you want to go beyond what you thought you were capable of. I highly recommend spending time in Kim’s creative world, you won’t regret it!

Week Two & Three | Discovering Your Style & Elevating Your Imagery

1. Style Study
Very few take time to consider their signature style intentionally.
An invitation to ...
  • study the photos you're most connected to. (really see them)
  • evaluate your current work so that you can more intentionally define/refine your style.
Content includes a LIVE mood-boarding class (replay) (my favourite app for mood boarding), prompts, worksheets and extra inspo throughout the week.
2. Shooting as If.
An invitation to imagine, plan and intentionally shoot a dream visual story with the Elevate concepts in mind.
Let's call this shooting as if...
Shooting as if you got the dream deal. (ie. a magazine project, a product shoot, a travel series...)

Two LIVE session replays, and companion notes to carry with you as you shoot your dream scene.

Week Four | Develop Module Basics

Starting from the start of the Develop module we'll review the Develop panels and selective tools.

I promise to keep it interesting and not too techy. Simple, clear, and uncomplicated is always my goal.

With these basic skills covered, we'll be ready set for our deep dive into Lightroom editing.

Please be aware that the Lr interface undergoes regular updates, which may result in slight changes in Lightroom modules.

Week Five & Six | Oh the Lightroom Possibilities

We'll explore:
  • A variety of editing styles... airy, dramatic, filmy, matte, moody
  • how to replicate the editing styles you admire.
  • How light is everything and greatly affects your finished photos.
  • how I use the not-so-obvious sliders, panels, and selective tools to elevate my work. Step by step.
Please be aware that the Lightroom interface undergoes regular updates, which may result in slight changes to the develop module. However, rest assured that the core lessons and foundations of the software remain unchanged.

FAQs

Do I have to be a professional photographer to take this course?

Absolutely not. : ) Elevate is designed for anyone who wants to refine and elevate their photography.

I've never used Lightroom. Can I take this class?

A basic understanding of Lightroom is required. We will not be covering Lightroom catalog basics, files, folder structure etc.

Will you teach me how to make and sell my own Lightroom presets?

This class is not about creating presets to sell. But I will show you how to effectively develop your own signature-style preset(s) to create a cohesive editing style.

Will you teach me how to edit from scratch or do I need to use presets?

I'm a strong believer in using presets as a starting point then adjusting to achieve just the right look. Students will receive five Essential presets to use as their starting point. Like primer, not paint.
Not to worry though, I will also teach you how to edit from scratch.

Wait! Are you saying no more presets?

Absolutely not.
Presets are magical...but even more amazing is understanding what makes a preset work (or not) and how to best tweak the settings for your personal style!

I'm not interested in elevating my style. I just wanna learn more about editing. Is this class for me?

You could skip the finding your style and shooting sections and jump in once the Lightroom weeks begin. But... I do encourage you to follow along with it all. Visual style isn't just for still and lifestyle photography. When you develop and nurture your style it finds its way into the frame and edits almost all of the time.   ♡

You will need...

  • Lightroom Classic
  • a basic understanding of how Lightroom works.
  • a reliable wifi connection
  • a strong desire to elevate your photography.
